Gina Boyd and the Alfred State women's basketball team will head into the American Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Tournament as the #4 seed. The championships will be held at Alfred State February 23-24 in conjunction with the men's tournament.
Alfred State (4-15) will open up the tournament on Saturday with a Noon contest vs. #1 Thomas More. The Saints are currently 24-0 and ranked #2 in the latest D3Hoops.com poll. #3 Valley Forge (5-10) will take on #2 Finlandia (5-16) in the other semifinal slated for a 2 p.m. start. The winners of each semifinal contest will meet in the tournament title game on Sunday (2/23) at Noon.
Rayanna Anderson (Wellsville) has had a solid junior season to lead the Pioneers. She has connected on 45 three-pointers and leads the team with a 12.1 points per game average. She also leads the team with 96 assists. The Shaulis sisters have also been key for the blue & gold. Kelsey Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) is averaging 12 points per game while Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) is averaging 9.8.
In the paint the Pioneers have counted on freshmen Emily Kelley (Andover) and 2nd semester newcomer Jordyn Pettit (Wellsville). Kelley is averaging 9.9 points and 8.8 rebounds in her 16 appearances while Pettit is averaging 12.1 points and 11.2 rebounds in nine games.
Alfred State has not played anyone that has qualified for the tournament. A scheduled game vs. Valley Forge was cancelled due to a winter storm in January.
