April Acosta (Bronx/Evander Childs) hit a foul shot with four seconds remaining to lift the Alfred State women's basketball team to a 62-61 victory over Berkeley College on Saturday afternoon. The blue & gold are now 9-5 on the season.
The Pioneers led 16-13 after the 1st quarter and the game was tied at 31-31 at halftime. Alfred State grabbed back the lead in the 3rd and led 46-41 heading into the final quarter. In the 4th, the blue & gold held their largest lead, 59-50, with just under four minutes left before the Knights went on a 11-2 run to tie the game with 36 seconds remaining.
Both teams missed shots in their next possession before Acosta was fouled. After the missing the first shot, Acosta hit the game-winner. Berkeley's last second shot didn't fall and the Pioneers finished the two-game sweep of their weekend road trip.
Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) was 13 for 20 from the field and led all scorers with a season high 29 points. She also added nine rebounds and nine blocks in the game. Kimberly Levee (Dansville) added nine and Acosta chipped in nine boards to go with her four points.
The Pioneers shot 39.1% from the field for the game, 13.3% from three, and 58.8% from the line. The Knights forced the blue & gold into 29 turnovers.
Janera Roper led three Knights in double figures with 17 points and 12 boards. Gianna Acosta added finished with 12 while Baytania Newman had 10. Berkeley shot 27% from the field, 9.5% from three, and 51.4% from the line.
The Pioneers are back at in on Tuesday when they host Pitt-Bradford. The opening tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
