Pioneers Reel in Muskies

Dan Woodward with the lead

The Alfred State baseball team wrapped up their spring break trip with a 5-0 victory over Lakeland University on Saturday morning in Ft. Myers, FL. The Pioneers finish the trip with back-to-back victories.

The Pioneers got on the board in the 2nd inning when Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) drove home Nick Geyer (Newburgh Free Academy) with a RBI groundout. Geyer had led the inning off with a double.

The game remained 1-0 until the 6th when the blue & gold scored three runs. David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Limas) collected a RBI single and Burdett followed with a two run double. Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) added an insurance run in the 7th when he doubled home Danny Doran (Irondequoit).

The trio of Connor Hong (Rochester/Gates Chili), Jarrod Deaton (Newburgh Free Academy), and Jake Miller (Bethlehem, PA) combined on the shutout. All three went three innings in the contest. Hong didn't allow a hit and walked and struck out three, Deaton earned the win after he allowed four hits and one walk while striking out two, and Miller allowed one hit while striking out two to earn the save.

Pingitore was 2 for 3 with a RBI while Geyer was 2 for 4. Burdett finished the contest with 3 RBI.

The Muskies stranded nine runners on base in the contest and finished their spring trip with a 4-6 record.

The blue & gold begin AMCC play next Saturday when they travel to LaRoche to take on the defending champs. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
