The baseball team swept D'Youville, 16-6 and 8-5, as they closed out the 2017 season.
In the opener, Lucas Cornell (Alfred Almond) finished 3 for 3 with a homer and 3 RBI to pace the Pioneers 12-hit attack. Pedro Mora (Washington Heights/AP Randolph) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, and Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) was 2 for 4. Rafael Perozo (Bronx/St. Raymond) tossed the final four innings allowing four hits and two runs to earn the victory.
Thomas Shofi (Carmel) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits in the nightcap finishing 2 for 3 with a RBI. Alfred State collected seven hits in the nightcap, four were doubles. Jake Remington (Letchworth) worked the first 5.1 innings to earn the victory on the mound. He allowed eight hits and five runs while walking two and striking out two.
The lacrosse team defeated Franciscan 16-5 in the AMCC Showcase semifinals but fell 13-3 at Hilbert in the championship match.
Versus Franciscan, the Pioneers outscored the Barons 11-0 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Teddy Alvarado (Hilton) led the Pioneers with a 10 points game with five goals and five assists. Joe Johnson (Churchville) finished with four goals and two assists, AJ Soto (Churchville) and Dominic Arresta (Southampton) both had two goals and two assists, and Grana chipped in two goals and an assist. Tanner Morrow (Grand Island) was dominant in the face-off circle. He was 23 of 25 and picked up 21 ground balls. Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 11 saves in net to earn the victory.
Hilbert scored the first six goals and stymied any comeback attempts in the championship match vs. Hilbert. Landon Drum (Tully), Johnson, and Alvarado scored for the Pioneers while Morrow led the team with seven ground balls. Amidon made 14 saves in net.
Outdoor Track & Field: Men 12th at NYSCTC Championships
The track & field team competed at the NYSCTC Championships at St. John Fisher. Anders Presthus (Lansing) and Zach Curran (Williamson) led the way for the blue & gold.
Presthus was 2nd in the shot put with a toss of 14.04 m and was 3rd in the discus with a mark of 40.82 m. He was also 14th in the javelin (42.35 m) and 21st in the hammer throw (39.95 m). Curran registered a 5th place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 4.15 m. The combo of Presthus led the Pioneer men to a 12th place finish with 17.5 points.
Tim Berry (Midlakes) was 10th in the decathlon (4,307 points) and Jacob Hanss (East Rochester) was 12th in the steeplechase (10:02.17). Trevor Stiles (Hornell) was 13th in the 400 hurdles prelims crossing the finish line in 59.84 and Eric Hulbert (Mexico) was 21st in the steeple (10:26.88).
On the women's side, Holly Fiore (Niagara Falls) was 12th in the heptathlon (2,972 points) and 13th in the javelin (25.94 m) while Steffanie Preston (Groton) was 14th (25.28 m). Lindsey Thiel (Liverpool) was 16th in the 10,00 m (42.11.39).
