Alfred State to Host Special Olympic Spectactular Friday
The Alfred State athletic department has partnered with Special Olympics and will be hosting the Inaugural Special Olympics Track & Field Spectactular at Pioneer Stadium on Friday May 3rd.
The event will feature 75 athletes from four local schools (Hornell, Bath Haverling, Jasper Troupsburg, and Canisteo-Greenwood) competing in track events (1,500 m, 200 m, 100, 50 m, 25 m, and relays) and field events (shot put, softball throw, long jump, and standing long jump). Every participant can compete in one running event and one field event.
Action begins at 10 a.m. with Opening Ceremonies with the track events slated to start at 10:15 a.m. The field events will begin after the completion of the track events at approximately 11:15 a.m.
Awards for each of the heats of the events will be given out right after the competition the event with each participant receiving a ribbon.
The Special Olympics is the charity of choice of Division III of the NCAA in which Alfred State was just accepted into last week.
The public is invited to come cheer on these athletes and enjoy the competition. The event will also be a precursor to the Region III Outdoor Track & Field Championships which will begin at 3 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium and will run all day Saturday as well.
