The cross country heads to Hamilton College on Saturday to compete in the New York State Championships. The Pioneers have been training for this race the past two weeks.
The Pioneers held on to defeat Erie CC 35-34 on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers withstood a hard charging Kats rally in the 4th quarter to hold on for the victory.
Alfred State jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led 35-13 with 10 minutes left in the game before the Kats scored three times to get back in the game. Erie had a chance to tie the game but their extra point attempt was missed after back to back personal fouls moved the attempt back to the 33 yard line. ECC had one last chance after recovering the on-side kick but a 49-yard field goal attempt sailed wide.
Gregory Hampton (Uniondale) finished 9 for 24 for 162 yards and three scores while Dileel Bartley (Rochester/Edison) had three catches for 81 yards (2 scores) and 12 carries for 45 yards (1 score).
Keegan Phalen (East Aurora) was key for the Pioneer defense. He finished with nine tackles and two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown). John Garbowski (Lakeland) had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery while Rory Spain (Tully) had 11 tackles and an interception. Nick DePofi (Union Endicott) chipped in nine tackles and a sack while David Howell (Greece Athena) and Russel Yerger-Moe (Iroquois) each picked up a sack. Derek Liner (Unatego) picked off a pass.
The Pioneers finished with 246 total yards while the Kats had 337. Erie was penalized 17 times for 197 yards while Alfred was hit with 11 penalties for 127 yards.
