Cross Country: Men 8th, Women 13th at U of Rochester Invite
The men's cross country team finished 8th while the women finished 13th at the annual University of Rochester Invitational.
Joe Seitz (Williamsville) led the blue & gold on the 8k men's course with a 63rd place finish. He crossed the finish line in 28:04.0. The Pioneers finished ahead of St. John Fisher, Nazareth, Hobart, Morrisville, Cazenovia, Wells, and Geneseo. There were 163 runners in the competition.
Kelly Healy (Maple Hill) led the Lady Pioneer women in the 6k course with a 107th place finish (26:30.7).
The Pioneers fell behind 35-6 early in the 4th quarter before rallying to cut it to two scores but Concordia (MI) held off the rally for the 35-21 victory.
Greg Hampton (Uniondale) finished the day 11 for 26 for 212 yards. Khris Greggs (Rochester/Aquinas) was the leading receiver with three catches for 97 yards and a score while Rasheed Williams (Swedesboro, NJ) rushed 22 times for 71 yards and a score.
John Garbowski (Lakeland) led the defense with 10 tackles while Phalen and Rory Spain (Tully) each chipped in eight. Brett Harrington (Rochester/Edison) picked off a 1st quarter pass while Keegan Phalen (East Aurora), Mike DeGroat (Vestal), Matt Munson (Clyde Savannah), and Nick DePofi (Union Endicott) all had sacks.
Concordia gained 371 yards (316 passing and 55 rushing) compared to Alfred's 327 (212 passing and 115 rushing).
Men's Soccer: 1-4
The Pioneers were tripped up 3-0 by Elmira and 3-1 by Pitt-Bradford this past week. Versus Elmira, Alfred was outshot 23 to 8 with Nickolas Weir making six saves. Kyle Jones (Wilson) netted the lone goal vs. Pitt-Bradford with the assist credited to Michael Yacuzzo (East Rochester). Nick Smith (Arkport) made five saves in net.
A scheduled game at Keuka was postponed due to the strong thunderstorms on Wednesday.
Women's Soccer: 3-2
The Lady Pioneers fell 3-0 at Oswego in their lone contest of the week. Alfred was outshot 27 to 3 in the game. Krista DeCarlo (West Islip) made six saves in net.
A scheduled game vs. Keuka was postponed due to the strong thunderstorms on Wednesday.
The Lady Spikers swept a pair of matches on Saturday sweeping Penn State Beaver and Penn State DuBois 3-0.
Grace Hall (Ellicotville) led the way with 13 kills and six digs while Lera Braun (Waterloo) passed out 39 assists, picked up 10 kills, and was credited with six digs. Mallory Eberhardt (Lyons) finished with 19 digs and nine kills.
